The Best Hats to Wear to the Beach

As you head to the beach, the last decision on your way out the door is which hat you should throw on. The five-panel trucker hat? The bucket hat? The beanie? Fortunately for you, we ranked all these options below. Here are the best hats to wear at the beach.

7. The fitted baseball cap

No disrespect to fitted caps, but they're not the beach look, you sweat more in them, and typically a fitted is the last item of clothing you want getting soaked or covered with sand. We love fitteds, but they're streetwear, not beachwear.

6. The fedora

If you're a ska band taking a break from your tour for a beach day, this is the right hat for you. Otherwise, fedoras don't stay on when you're playing football, don't keep the sun out of your eyes, and look weird with board shorts. Hey, if you can pull it off, you can pull it off. But many can't.

5. The Panama hat

Panama hats are classic hot-weather hats. But they can be trickier to match with your overall look. With a Hawaiian shirt? Sure. For our part we're more in the tees-and-athletic-shorts camp, if we're not already in a wetsuit and fins. Use your Panama hat with caution.

4. The beanie

Right in the middle of the ranking? Beanies aren't warm-weather gear, right? True, but when there's a good set at 5:30 in the morning and it's foggy and windy, you've got to wear something on your way down to the water. Beanies are the perfect North Coast or early morning fit at the beach. They're ranked in the middle here because it really depends on the weather. An 85-degree day at Doheny is not the time for a beanie.

3. The big floppy sun hat

It's a classic for a reason. It keeps the sun off, and it looks great if you have the figure for it, or if you're Audrey Hepburn. We don't do big sun hats at Zero Breath Clothing and most dudes don't rock them, but no shade if you do (no pun intended).

2. The bucket hat

Bucket hats are chill as hell, they keep you cool, and it's easy to throw them on or slip them off as needed. Bucket hats are great for the beach.

1. The five panel trucker hat

This is the one. A five panel hat with a mesh back is breathable and comfortable. You can work up a sweat in a five-panel hat without feeling like you need to take it off. You can serve a volleyball without it flying off. You can wear it in the surf and not worry about getting it wet because the loose design means it'll dry quickly. Throw it on backwards to protect your neck. Throw it on forwards to keep the sun out of your eyes. Throw it on sideways to protect...one of your ears, we suppose.

We might be biased due to the men's five panel hats we have on offer at Zero Breath Clothing. But a five panel hat looks more like the beach to us than these other hats. Browse our hats and other beach clothes, from T-shirts for divers and swimmers to beach shorts, now.
